2021 Recap from a highschooler's pov

Picture
As a high-schooler, the one constant connection we have with the rest of the world is social media. Waking up at 9 AM and sifting through the threads of stories and posts on Instagram was embarrassingly my only source of news, political stands and social drama. On everyone’s stories were reposts of memes, cartoons, interviews, and the progression of life when everyday felt as if it was put on pause. So, here's the 2021 I saw.

Capitol Riot | Wednesday January 6, 2021
Today, I finally understand why these past couple of months my mom never let me hang a blue sign
in front of our home as opposed to the red ones everyone else had. She was scared.

Throughout the day, classmates posted scenes of Pro-Trump storming into the capitol smiling with guns in hand. In the background, the news reporter
on the side was showing security camera footage of the Congressmen inside the building. Then, the screen split in two with the blinking circle at
the top left corner reading “Live." On the left were the shouts of joy and the self satisfaction on people's faces while storming in.
And on the right, the congressmen hiding under thin wooden tables trying to find safety. Alarmed and Scared.

Biden-Harris Inauguration | Wednesday January 20, 2021

Today, Ms. Harris gave a speech with a message of hope to all the young girls across the country. Watching her stand by the podium, and deliver her speech was astonishing, but what stuck was when she looked at me through the tv screen and spoke “we are bold, fearless, and ambitious - we not only dream, we do.”

Covid-19 | January 2021-December 2021

Today is the same as every other day has been. The same teams meeting with the same teachers speaking in a monotonous tone. And the same reason we are in online school. Covid-19. The number of cases are increasing by the day, and another variant is spreading. One out of the 365 mirrored days in 2021.

George Floyd Trial | Monday March 8, 2021
Today a victim finally got justice. But it was only after he begged the officer to stop indenting his knee in the victim's throat. It was only after the victim cried out “I can’t breathe”, for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. It was only after the victim was choked to death. Will justice ever truly be served?

Atlanta Shooting | Tuesday March 16, 2021

Today another 8 innocent fell victims due to being racially targeted. America is advertised to be with “liberty and justice for all”,
but time and time again Asian Americans are always silent victims of these hate crimes.

2021 Olympics | Friday July 23, 2021
Today, I watched her through the screen with her hair blowing away from her face due to all the speed she was gaining.
Her feet glued to the skateboard and then finishing with the smile of satisfaction. Today she made history at only 12.

Texas Abortion Law | Wednesday September 1, 2021

Today I questioned the morals of us Americans. It should be morally correct for a woman to do whatever she wishes with her own body.
Meaning that when it's her body, it's her choice. So, why is he choosing?

These were the major events in 2021 that I experienced through social media;
A little collection of thoughts and emotions I had towards each event that I believe shaped 2021.

Thank you
